*Please note that Cappella Archive does not act as an author's publicity or literary agent,
nor is it a national or world-wide book distribution service.*
CAPPELLA ARCHIVE provides a Book on Demand typesetting, printing and publishing facility for authors. It is designed as an economical method of printing and publishing, without the expense of large print runs or the commission charges of book distributors. The typeset book file is stored as a digitised Archive in the PostScript professional printing language and may be printed or re-edited at any time.
Although reasonably priced, books Printed on Demand are necessarily more expensive to produce per copy than mass-market paperbacks. It is for this reason that the service is more suitable for the authors of specialist subjects than those of general fiction. Great care is taken over the quality of the typesetting, binding, and the presentation of an edition. To obtain the maximum return for the authors, they or their agents are encouraged to sell directly to the public by mail order, or through societies and academic bodies.
The cost of an Initial Edition varies according to the complexity of the typesetting; the number of illustrations, and the chosen binding. As a guide, the published book cover price is approximately the cost per copy of the Initial Edition and future orders are printed at 60% of the cover price. Of course, the cover price may vary in subsequent years to reflect any changes in the cost of labour or materials.
1. PRODUCTION
Cappella Archive undertakes to typeset an Initial Edition of thirty copies for an author, registered with an ISBN number in Whitaker's Books in Print. As required by law, six of those copies are sent to the United Kingdom Copyright Libraries and a minimum of three months' notice is required before a publication date. The typeset book file is stored in a PostScript Archive and subsequent copies are Printed on Demand as they are ordered. There is no additional cost to the author, other than the production cost of those additional copies sold by the author personally.
2. COVERS AND DUST JACKETS
The Cappella Archive House Style of binding is either a printed bookcloth hard cover or a glazed parchment card soft cover. Illustrated dust jackets are quoted for separately and authors may make other arrangements for these if they wish. Gold leaf or hot foil titling or decoration is also a separate item.
DISTRIBUTION
Books are only sent to booksellers and distributors when specifically ordered and unsolicited samples will not be distributed by Cappella Archive to the book trade gratis. However, copies are provided on a Sale or Return basis for display at an author's local bookshop, or by Cappella Archive at a book trade fair.
4. CHARGES AND ROYALTIES
The current post-publication charges and royalties are:
5. DEPOSIT AND PRICE VARIATION
The production price of the Initial Edition will be confirmed in writing beforehand, but Cappella Archive reserves the right at any time after acceptance of an order to ask the author to meet any unforseen alteration in such costs. A one third deposit is payable on confirmation of the order; a second after approval of the galley proof, before production of the book-block proof; and the third, thirty days after receipt of the Initial Edition.
6. OWNERSHIP OF MATERIALS
The typeset archives, all printing plates, computer discs, film, and digitised files, shall remain the exclusive property of Cappella Archive, including all materials used in their production.
The textual copyright of the work naturally remains with the author, but the typographical copyright of the published printed page belongs to Cappella Archive, and cannot be reproduced without written permission.
All items provided by the author shall remain the author's property and all materials or property in transit to or from the author shall be deemed to be at the author's risk and expense and should be insured accordingly.
7. ILLUSTRATIONS
It is the author's responsibility to ensure that all illustrations supplied are suitable for the work required. Every effort will be made to obtain the best reproduction but, because digital colour printing is still under development, there can be no guarantee of an exact match in colour or texture between the author's originals and the printed result.
8. CLAIMS
All queries about the invoice or goods supplied must be made to Cappella Archive within thirty days of the invoice date or delivery, whichever is the latest.
9. PROOFS
An author's final copy should be saved on to disk as an unformatted Ascii Text file and the disk must be signed and dated as having been proof-read by the author. Typeset galley and book-block proofs will be provided for the author's scrutiny and a signed approval form must be returned before production can begin. Any subsequent alterations to the text will be charged for.
10. ILLEGAL MATTER
Cappella Archive shall be indemnified by the author in respect of any claims, costs, and expenses arising out of any libellous matter or any infringement of copyright, patent, design, or other proprietary or personal rights, contained in any material printed or published for the author. The indemnity shall extend to any amounts paid for and as a consequence of legal advice in settlement of any claim. Cappella Archive may refuse to accept work without reasons being given.
11. FORCE MAJEURE
Cappella Archive shall be under no liability if it is unable to carry out any provision of the contract for any reason beyond its control including (without limiting the causes) Act of God, legislation, war, fire, flood, drought, theft, failure of power supply, action taken by others, or owing to any inability to procure materials required for the performance of the contract.
12. LAW
These conditions and all other express terms of contract shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the United Kingdom.
