Some PostScript Utilities

The following are provided as a courtesy only. The list is not exhaustive, nor is it a recommendation. It can never hurt to search Google for new software, or to go to VersionTracker.

Mac

Bare Bones software offer two excellent text editors, TextWrangler and BBEdit. TextWrangler is free! A language module that provides PostScript syntax colouring for both TextWrangler and BBEdit is provided here.

GhostScript is a Unix-based system for manipulating PostScript and creating PDFs. It includes a PostScript software intepreter environment, where you can enter PostScript commands and debug code.

PSUtils is another set of Unix utilities that offer a range of PostScript manipulation, including imposition.

LinuxPrinting.org is a useful site with information and software for getting Macs to print to specific printers.

With the arrival of OS X, Macs can benefit from the world of open source Unix software that is available.

Windows

Not having a Windows system, I cannot give many assurances!

A text editor that unwraps texts is essential. NoteTab Pro and TextCon are two text editors for Windows.

Adobe's PostScript printer driver provides PostScript support and a PS downloader.

PrintFile is a PostScript downloader and utility.

PSalter is a PostScript language editing utility and also provides graphical previews.

There are Windows implementations of GhostScript and PSUtils. There are also a large number of freeware and shareware PDF creation utilities.

PDF PageMaster is software to split, assemble, merge, and manage PDF files.

Acrobat Reader is Adobe's own free PDF viewer.

Unixen

I don't need to tell you about text editors, do I...? Vi, pico, Emacs will all do the job excellently.

Ghostscript is essential.

PSUtils is a good set of utilities for manipulating PostScript files.

Acrobat Reader Adobe freeware for reading and printing PDF files.

Classic Mac

It may be increasingly difficult to find software for System 9 or earlier. However, there are a number of software archive sites, such as Pure Mac.

Let'erRIP An excellent document manager with Include Resource facilities. Do not confuse with 'LetterRIP' which is an Intranet application.

PS2EPS+ PostScript conversion to EPS, TIFF and PICT and a fast viewer with good error reporting. Prints good images but awful text. Sits on top of a useable MacGS 2.0

EPStoPICT Converts level 1 PS or EPS to PICT: rasterises up to 350 dpi. Files will view in SimpleText, print on non-PostScript printers, or import into PhotoShop. Uses ATM so good text.

Ari's Print Helper A Mac Exchange plug-in to print PDF pages in any order
An essential tool for the front/back printing of PDF files as book pages.

Adobe's PostScript driver will give you a PostScript utility for downloading PostScript to the printer.
